What is the lifespan of a Philips LED ceiling light? ›

Long lifetime

The lifetime of a LED light source can be up to 10 times longer than that of traditional light sources. A conventional bulb has a lifetime of about 2.000 hours, while Philips LED lighting has a lifetime up to 20.000 hours. That is the equivalent of 20 years!

LED bulbs afford in the region of 50,000 hours of light, with some brands boasting as many as 100,000 hours. In general, terms, if you use your lights for 10 hours each day, LEDs should serve you well for just shy of 14 years.

A voluntary recall has been announced by CPSC that includes certain OSRAM SYLVANIA ULTRA^™ LED lighting products with the following bulb shapes: A19, G25, and PAR20. The bulbs may overheat, resulting in the potential to cause a fire hazard.

This can range from 5 to 20 years, but there is more to the actual life of an LED than a simple manufacturer estimate. Many factors can influence the actual lifespan of the LED, including intense heat, a high frequency of use, and operating the LED light on a higher current than intended.

LED bulbs do not burn out like older bulb types, they degrade over time until they are noticeably dimmer. You will know when it is time for an LED replacement if your lighting is too dim to illuminate the space sufficiently, especially if this is causing eye strain or colour loss.

Unlike incandescent light bulbs, LEDs don't produce light using heat. This is part of what makes them so energy efficient. The downside is that their components can be sensitive to overheating, which can cause them to burn out prematurely.

Reasons often include a faulty power supply, loose connections, a faulty circuit design, or even damage due to water ingress caused by rain. Whatever the reason is for your LED lights not working and whatever the tell-tale signs are, there's usually a solution to the issue.

America's ban on incandescent light bulbs, 16 years in the making, is finally a reality. Well, mostly. A rule issued in 2007, rolled back by the Trump administration, and updated last year by the Biden administration, effectively bans the sale of common incandescent light bulbs.

Most standard LED warranties last three to five years and cover the cost of replacing the product only.

Lamps and light bulbs also utilized asbestos as an insulating agent, similar to many other appliances. Asbestos was used as an insulated coating and several elements within the lamp or bulb, such as some in-bulb mountants or insulators and asbestos-coated foil.

But in ordinary use, the bulb's life can be shortened by environmental conditions such as heat and humidity, the effects of power-supply cycling, when the lights are switched off and on, or the failure of other components.

There are a number of basic reasons for LED lights to fail but the primary issue is heat. Over-heating can be a result of a number of design and assembly issues but is still the cause of the majority of LED lamp failures – both in the fitting themselves and also the drivers.

Well, we're happy to tell you they can indeed last for over a decade. Be prepared to be amazed—and to put your ladder away for a while. Once you finally change out your traditional incandescents with LED lights, you won't need to strain to replace those out-of-reach bulbs until the late 2020s.
